Long Overdue Update

I've been very lax in updating this blog, and keeping you all updated with my training, so here comes two months of updates...

The picture above is me at the beginning of my training, about two weeks before I injured my right knee. That in turn lead to visits to doctors, a very helpful physiotherapist and strict orders not to run on it for at least a further two weeks. In all I think I set myself back over three weeks. Enough that I was very concerned I wouldn't be ready for the 10k.

Having said that, throughout my running downtime I continued to watch my food intake, and I found other ways to work on my cardo fitness so it wasn't a complete loss.

Once my knee was back up to scratch I worked my way back into running slowly. I based my running off a recommended 10k training regime from a Japanese 10k website. It seemed to involve a lot of interval training and not much else but who was I to argue with a professionally written training plan. I also joined the gym at work.

Unfortunately the program wasn't the best. I've discovered this through two sources. Firstly I've discovered KinEli Publishing (a small New Zealand based publishing house). Their books don't look up to much but they are filled with sensible advice and useful information. I've also taken on a personal trainer (Chris Corcoran) who's helped me work out a new customised plan.

This weekend I ran 5.5 miles (about 8.8km) on Sunday. I'm aiming to add at least a mile to this next week which will bring it well over 10k. This is also going to be my first week with hill training. So, anyway I've been working hard to get ready for the 10k which is now only 3 weeks away, and for the first time I feel fairly confident about it....

The Start

On the 4th October 2009 I'll be doing the Rodley to Keighley 13 Mile Charity Run.

Lets put that in perspective.
At the beginning of the year I weighed in at over 117.2kg, and could barely run for a continuous minute. In fact my very first training session involved just that - running for one minute, 6 times, with two minutes to recover between each run. I finished hacking and coughing, and was in pain for an entire week afterward, yet later this year I'm planning to a half marathon.

The route:
I'll be running along the Leeds Liverpool Canal from Rodley to Victoria Park in Keighley.

Why:
The event is to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Cancer is a terrible trauma to deal with at any time in your life. I've recently been shocked by a number of people close to me whom I considered far too young to have cancer being diagnosed as having this killer condition. Even when successful cancer treatment takes its toll on people, changing their lives completely. Often though there is nothing which can be done.

I'm doing this because I'm not a doctor or a scientist, but I still feel I can make a difference. I'm hoping that by taking this action I can pursuade you to donate a little money to cancer research.

Training
On route to the half marathon I'll be doing a number of shorter events. I'm doing the John Carr 5k in May, the Jane Tomlinson 'Run For All' Leeds 10k at the end of June, and the Darrington Fun run in July. For some of these events I'll be finding interesting ways to collect for Cancer Research. For example I'll be running a sweepstake on my finishing time for the Leeds 10k. I'll keep a tally of the money raised offline through these events on this page.

Sponsorship
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Cancer Research UK gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
